Daniel Simcox is a media artist based in the West Midlands. Daniel works primarily with photography, video, analogue and installation art. Responding to his surroundings Daniel’s inspiration comes from obsolete media that has become, or is becoming, lost. Daniel acquired an MA in Media Arts from Coventry University in 2009. Along with graduating with Distinction Daniel also achieved the prestigious Doug Benevento Award. Daniel went on to exhibit his work, ‘Act of Forgetting’, in the Herbert Art Gallery in September 2009 as a part of exhibitions ‘Kinopixel’ and ‘A Thing About Machines’. This interest in ‘old media’ stems from an upbringing with film and analogue video being the most frequently utilised technologies. As the digital revolution coincided with Daniel’s teenage years it pushed film and video into obscurity and left him with feelings of nostalgia and a sense of loss. Often utilising found footage that has been lost or discarded, Daniel re-frames, re-negotiates and re-presents the footage in a way that observes the media as a physical object as well as captured moments in time. Recently Daniel has based works around analogue media such as 35mm transparencies, VHS tapes, 16mm film and disposable cameras. |
